you know youre an art student when...

Tue Nov 27, 2007, 9:55 PM
when someone next to you says "hmm, i love how you are crosshatching that" and you reply: "maybe later you can come over to my place and we can crosshatch together!"

...also, when you have no time at all to do art anymore.

sure, im learning, but only the mechanics...still lives and naked people...thats all the drawing ive been doing.

and somehow, when i try to do art, i have an already exhausted skill...so it turns out like shit. ive done something after months of nothing, not because i wanted to paint, just because i had a feeling and i forced myself to paint it. but i dont thinks its any good...ill try to post it when my camera has batteries...

of course, it wont be like this forever...well move on to more creative things eventually...the first year is the hardest to get through, everyone keeps telling me...

i should have called my new cat chicken...i dont know why...

It's weird, I can totally relate to what you're saying. When I was an art student, doing something I love almost felt like an obligation. The years after I finished school I didn't do as much painting, but it wasn't because I didn't want to, it was because I wasn't forced to do so many paintings a semester and I could just wait for inspiration to strike and then find time in my schedule to do it. And most of the stuff I've done the past few years is a million times better than what I did in school...

yea, my work is much better when it isnt forced, and when i just wait for inspiration...but i want to learn too...im so behind...im a terrible artist...not even an artist...compared to most people in my school...thats an other thing that makes me feel bad and takes my inspiration...

Well I've found that as long as you compare yourself to everyone else you'll always feel like crap. Your art isn't any worse than anyone else's, just different. If it's not everything you want it to be, then you work harder to make it better. But there's always gonna be someone better than you. Just do your best, and learn what your limitations are and work within those, find the one thing you do better than the rest. That's what I've tried to do the past few years, and I'm so much happier with my work now than when I was in school and I was trying to out-paint the other guy :P

true, but the thing is, art school is one of the most competitive schools there can be. everyone is trying to out-paint the other guy, and if you arent, you feel like youre just falling behind...i dont know, i still have to figure out how to deal with it...i try to just find what im good at, but while we are still doing basic gestures and still lives and that kind of stuff, its basically how well you can portray what you see, and i find im not so good at that...
